About Dr. Abbot Lee Granoff
I am a board certified psychiatrist and nationally acclaimed author who specializes in the psychiatric evaluation, medical and therapeutic care of individuals who are suffering from mental illness. I have a solo private practice in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Hampton Roads area. This allows me to give my patients the privacy and attention they deserve. Patients come to me from all over the country.
With more than 40 years of experience as a practicing psychiatrist, I specialize in the treatment of anxiety, panic, depression, OCD and sexual disorders. I am an internationally recognized author of the book HELP! I THINK I'M DYING! PANIC ATTACKS AND PHOBIAS, as well as the producer and narrator of the acclaimed educational DVD PANIC ATTACKS AND PHOBIAS CONQUERED: PATIENTS SHARE THEIR VICTORIES.
I am a dedicated medical professional providing private and personalized care for my patients. Each patient is unique, so a unique and comprehensive treatment plan is created for each. Follow up treatment includes medication management, therapy or a combination of both. I find treatment becomes more effective in time and cost when this is done by one highly trained individual rather than splitting it with multiple providers. Let me help you on the road to recovery.

A psychiatrist who has experienced panic himself
At 36, a few years after opening his practice, Dr. Granoff had two full-blown panic attacks. The first woke him at 3:24 in the morning with crushing chest pain and the certainty that he was dying, and sent him racing to the emergency room, where his EKG was normal. The second struck on the expressway six weeks later. That experience humbled him, made him more compassionate toward patients who suffer from panic and phobias, and led him to write his book. Read his story in his own words.
In the news
A South Hampton Roads "Notable Neighbors" profile described Dr. Granoff as a leading area expert on panic attacks, noting that psychiatrists from around the country look to him for answers. "Part of the stigma of getting treatment is from the old way psychiatry is viewed," he told the reporter. "Ninety-eight percent of mental illness has nothing to do with being crazy." He has also been quoted in Healthy Living magazine, and reviews of his book have appeared in The Virginian-Pilot, The Cincinnati Enquirer, The Daily Oklahoman and The Annals of Pharmacotherapy.
